Today, the words mental health continue to be a source of great distress.. This after over a century of trying to identify, redefine, educate and normalize conditions of mental health. Science, including great medical advancements, seem to do little to lessen the fear of conditions of mental health Pharmacological offerings for treatment have themselves become suspects, even when their effectiveness is seen and expressed by users. To the extent that we are mental beings, mental health is a part of life and is here to stay, this is a fact of life, so lets normalize it. What is not acceptable however, is the rapid increase in conditions of mental health. Just as we continue to experience medical illnesses in our bodies, we will have mental conditions of our minds. The focus of modern medicine to treat conditions after they have occurred in the body, points to its weakness in purporting preventative medicine. The resulting death of millions annually could be attributed to the after effect of modern medicine. A result is the increase in Holistic medicine, with more focus on preventative and natural cures. In treating mental health, perhaps we need to identify the mind, what it is, its components and how it functions Working in mental health for almost fifteen years, I always define the mind to clients with mental health conditions. Once I tell them that the mind is not an organ like the heart or lungs that they can point to, therefore it requires different methods of treatment, they become calmer, responsive and more treatable. Our industrialized, fast passed, global environments have lead to a rise in mental health conditions. This is seen in the high rate of stress, anxiety, fear, hopelessness and lawlessness that plague all societies today. Treatments and treatment centers for all of these conditions are also on the rise and need to continue to ward off generations of mental ill. One highly overlooked condition that contributes to mental health and requires urgent attention in our society is trauma . The result of trauma is seen in both children and adults. It is easily recognized in veterans of war, however in young children, as well as the everyday citizen, it is just as prevalent and begs for attention and treatment. Stress and anxiety are seen in ADD and ADHD conditions in children, in adults it is seen in the drastic rise in legal and illegal drugs to relax and cope with everyday living. The rise in mental health points to breakdowns in our systems, our communities, our homes and our families. Loving caring communities and homes will, produce more balanced, healthy children and families. An abusive home with drugs, alcohol, lack of love, care and support will produce confused and mentally imbalanced children. To effectively treat mental health we must take a serious look at ourselves, our systems, our communities and our worlds. We must reassess our systems of value. Do we value things and properties over human lives? Is it more important for one segment of our society to amass fortunes than it is for little children to go to bed hungry and sick? Does ones class, color, culture or race make that one less human? LET'S THINK ON THESE THINGS. |
